Description

In this presentation, Daniel DeSanto and Prudence Doherty described an ongoing collaboration with Education Professor Binta Colley's Social Education and Social Studies class, a course for third-year education majors that focuses on teaching methods, assessment alternatives, and resources used in the elementary classroom.

For three years, students in the class have worked with a team of Bailey/Howe librarians to learn about teaching with primary sources. The presentation focused on the third year, when a component was added that involved creating lesson plans using primary sources in two of the UVM Libraries' Center for Digital Initiatives collections. Doherty summarized the four parts of a day-long library session, and DeSanto outlined the process of creating lesson plans that occurred over the next several months.

The project was quite successful. The 28 pre-service teachers in EDEL 157 experienced lesson planning with digital primary sources for either a third or fifth grade audience and created resources that could be used by other teachers. Selected lesson plans are posted on the CDI website (see below for the URL) as teaching resources. The project was not without challenges, and in future years, the project team will sequence instruction throughout the semester, create their own project lesson plan template, and devote more attention to pedagogical techniques of teaching with primary sources.
