Abstract
Internal carbon pricing (ICP) is a mechanism for reducing carbon emissions that is being employed at a variety of institutions of higher education across the United States and abroad. ICP centers around the idea of an institution taxing itself for its carbon emissions and can be implemented via a carbon charge, a proxy price or a sustainability fund. For institutions such as UVM who seek to be among the nation's premier research institutions, ICP can be a great tool for meeting climate action goals. My research findings were that ICP as a mechanism for reducing carbon emissions is increasing in popularity within higher education, ICP exemplifies the innovative, bold action required to adequately address the grand challenge of climate change, and UVM has an opportunity to embrace this mechanism as a way to meet its climate commitments and stand out as a leader in climate action in higher education.
