Abstract
In this thesis, I investigate the role of death in Edward Gorey's work, specifically The Hapless Child (1961). I researched Gorey's inspirations in the Victorian aesthetic and Gothic literary genre, analyzing their appearance in his work. I examined Gorey's images through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin's Rabelais and His World, seeking to better understand the role of satire and mimicry in Gorey's illustrations. Finally, I formed my own unique hypothesis on Gorey's intention as artist, and the role of death in children's literature at large.
