Abstract
The need to reduce phosphorus inputs to surface waters is considerably increasing as harmful algal blooms continue to become more prevalent. However, the excess nutrients that contribute to these blooms are integral to the agricultural industry for uses such as in animal feed and fertilizers which are not easily altered. The individual use of drinking water residuals (DWTR) and zeolite amendments for phosphate sorption in filters are promising, but their efficiencies were never combined in the same system. This study investigates the use of novel filter devices with DWTR filter media amended with zeolite for efficient agricultural excess phosphate removal.
