How perceptions of healthcare workers affect healthcare seeking behavior in people with schizophrenia

Abstract
People with schizophrenia are more likely than others to require healthcare due to increased rates of co-morbidities such as cardiovascular disease, COPD, substance use disorders and other health issues. Despite the increased need for healthcare, people with schizophrenia are hesitant to seek health care due to experiences of diagnosis overshadowing, lack of understanding or empathy due to the mental illness, and generally feeling unsupported when interacting with healthcare professionals. It is important to understand these experiences so healthcare workers can improve care and support to produce better treatment adherence and outcomes for people with schizophrenia.
