Abstract
Trees provide cities with a wide range of ecosystem services including stormwater management, air filtration, and temperature control. Urban Tree Canopy Assessments allow communities to monitor, understand, and better manage their green infrastructure. Using object-based image analysis (OBIA), high-resolution land-cover maps were developed using remotely sensed LiDAR and multispectral imagery. Automated feature extraction technology classifies data based on spectral properties, physical characteristics, and relationship to surrounding features. Classification errors are manually corrected for high accuracy results. The Spatial Analysis Lab has carried out Urban Tree Canopy Assessments for several cities, providing comprehensive analyses of tree canopy density, distribution, and change.
