CRISPR as a security risk: Exploring the Possibility of Bioweaponry

Abstract
CRISPR is a technology that allows for targeted gene editing in both bacterial and eukaryotic organisms. With CRISPR, procedurally simple genetic modifications can be made to human genetic information: genetic mutations could be eliminated, genetic diseases could be cured, and precision medicine could rapidly advance. However, CRISPR�s incredible potential could be used for both medicinal improvement and widespread harm. CRISPR can create unintended harmful outcomes, but should one be concerned about intentional abuse of CRISPR? Despite the BWC forbidding the development of biological weapons in 1972, is CRISPR a powerful enough tool that fearing its applications in bioweaponry is justified? Based on a lack of evidence of other countries abusing CRISPR, the limited control scientists have over CRISPR, and the massive amount of resources required to make a genetically engineered bioweapon such as a pathogen resistant to antibiotics, CRISPR is not a viable security threat, despite recent developments in the field.
