Natural History Museums Breathe New Life to Otherwise Discarded Specimens: A Focus on Small Mammals

Abstract
We took small mammal bycatch specimens from the Vermont Family Forests (VFF) annual small mammal surveys (part of their broader biodiversity surveys) and created research skins to be housed at the Zadock Zoological Collections, located on the University of Vermont campus. These specimens die in Sherman traps and are then frozen, identified to species, and sexed and aged (if possible). Once obtained, we created research skins, removed the skull and procured tissues which will provide invaluable information on size, weight, genetics, disease, occupancy, and other data that will contribute to the conservation of species now and into the future.
