Abstract
One of the most integral terms to the study and discussion of operating room (OR) management is �efficiency.� Early work by OR efficiency researchers rested on the assumption that perioperative services can be designed for optimum performance, similar to a factory�s assembly line. Historically, the hospital has operationalized human processes using this model and OR management sciences reflect this reductionism. Using a myriad of OR management metrics (e.g., first-case on-time starts [FCOTS], OR utilization rates, turnover times), hospital administrators and clinical directors drive operational performance and generate higher revenue streams as the measurements improve. Presumably, the past data can predict the future with some level of accuracy. However, the components of perioperative services interact with each other, react, and self-organize. In this chapter, we review the different methods of tracking OR efficiency. Then, we apply performance frontiers to OR management data and develop a new tool to visualize efficiency.
