Abstract
The purpose of this project was to create a series of short stories that were linked thematically and that shared a common setting. This collection of short stories is grounded primarily in Burlington, Vermont. Beyond this connection, they are thematically linked by the pull between cynicism, apathy, and idealism. Heart for Hire considers the difference between the idyllic representation of Burlington and the reality of widespread homelessness and drug addiction. Central to these stories is the theme of the insidious influence of money. Each story is followed by an afterword that speaks to the development of the story and the revision process. Charles Baxter’s collection of essays on fiction writing Burning Down the House was fundamental to the revision process.
