Abstract
Characterizing an organism's ability to survive a thermal stress event is crucial to understanding how it will adapt to a changing climate with increasingly variable environmental pressures. To contribute to a greater understanding, this study characterized the genetic basis of embryonic thermal tolerance in Drosophila melanogaster, focusing on the embryonic stage of development, as it is a life stage with high levels of thermal selection and remains understudied. Building on prior work identifying SP70 and sog as candidate genes, this study aimed to clarify their roles in thermal adaptation. The results uncovered a fascinating epistatic interaction between these two genes that caused an elevated embryonic survival proportion. Understanding genetic interactions such as these can allow for predictions to be made about how organisms may react and adapt to a changing climate.
