Abstract
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by stomach acid flowing into and irritating the lining of the esophagus, causing heartburn and other adverse symptoms. Smoking contributes to complications from GERD. We examined the prevalence of GERD among participants in a large randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of very low nicotine content cigarettes among three vulnerable smoker populations: socioeconomically disadvantaged women of reproductive age, individuals with opioid dependence, and individuals with affective disorders.
