Abstract
Abstract Selenium is an essential micronutrient and has been found to be a component of several crucial enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPX). GPX is a naturally occurring enzyme essential for the management of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although ROS, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), form as a natural byproduct of metabolism, they are also responsible for oxidative stress-mediated damage of the cell. Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance of antioxidants and oxidants. This imbalance can lead to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. These potential hazards explain the importance of antioxidants and control mechanisms like GPX in the body. Studies evaluating the effects of the absence GPX showed the failure of cells to protect themselves from oxidative stress resulting in myocardial injury, ventricular dysfunction, and cardiomyopathy characteristic. This underlines the significance of developing a high functioning GPX mimic molecule.
