Testing a novel, translatable Western diet in a mouse model

Abstract
The Western diet is a high-fat, high-sugar, high-salt, low-fiber dietary pattern associated with nearly every major cardiometabolic disease, including the highly prevalent metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Although this dietary pattern and disease are very common, most research analyzing diet-driven diseases in animal models does not use a translatable diet, instead option for a very high-fat diet. As such, we sought to test a novel, translatable diet to gain a better idea of the impacts of this highly prevalent disease on metabolic health. To achieve this, male and female C57BL6/J mice (n=8-11/sex/group) were randomly divided into 2 groups: Control or Western diet. Mice were maintained for 20 weeks on diet. Early analyses suggest our translatable Western diet resulted in robust cardiometabolic disease and we expect further experiments to give a broader picture on how our diet can be utilized to better understand nutrition, diet, and health.
