Abstract
Substance use disorder (SUD) has devastating economic and social effects on communities. Between 2019 and 2025, Maine’s second largest city, Lewiston, reported a total of 1,503 drug overdoses which peaked at 342 overdose cases in 2022. While cases have been on a downtrend in recent years, much work has remained to prevent the relapse of SUD. Central Maine Healthcare has been offering Addiction Services, particularly a weekly 1-hour Recovery Group session. It provides an avenue for people with SUD to discuss their daily stressors. However, these individuals often have poor and unhealthy coping strategies. Three interviews with healthcare workers were also conducted to explore the challenges helping individuals with their recovery. In collaboration with healthcare workers, we developed a flexible scheduled outline of the Recovery Group session to provide structure, set goals, define expectations, and obtain constructive feedback. In addition, the session incorporated up to 10 minutes of mindful guided meditation. This systematic approach was implemented at one session and informal feedback was obtained. Future direction was discussed to determine the effectiveness of mindful meditation in addiction recovery.
