Abstract
Ahmed Kathrada was a South African activist who was central in the anti-Apartheid movement. His work with the African National Congress resulted in his split verdict in the 1963 Rivonia Trial, in which Nelson Mandela was famously sentenced to life in prison. Upon his release in 1990, Mr. Kathrada participated in post-Apartheid politics, advising President Mandela. Looking at his life through a political and legal lens, with a focus on examination of Asiatic Land Tenure and Indian Representation Act and transcripts from the Rivonia Trial, will uncover the methods, breakthroughs, and setbacks of the anti-Apartheid movement throughout the twentieth century.
