Abstract
This 2013 report by the Land Stewardship (LANDS) program evaluates the trail system of the 180-acre Pease Mountain Natural Area in Charlotte, Vermont. Managed by the University of Vermont Natural Areas Program, the area is an ecologically significant site used for conservation, education, and recreation.
The assessment identifies two primary trail loops: a Lower Loop (Red Trail) and an Upper Loop (Yellow Trail). While some sections remained intact, significant portions of the trail system — particularly the northern section of the Upper Loop — suffered from erosion, leading to dangerous conditions on steep rock faces following heavy seasonal rains. The report also notes issues with confusing or degraded signage and the proliferation of informal trails leading to private property. The report presents solutions for long-term maintenance of the area, such as infrastructure improvements, trail rerouting, and bettering signage.
