Abstract
Shelburne Pond lies in the eastern portion of Shelburne Township in Chittenden County, Vermont. Identified as a conservation priority in the 1960s, shoreline and upland properties have been acquired in the area by The Nature Conservancy over the past twenty-five years. Currently totaling 970 acres, much of the protected land has been deeded to The University of Vermont and managed as The H. Laurence Achilles Natural Area. The site stands out as the largest undeveloped water body in the Champlain Valley, with a rare combination of wetland, rock outcrop, and upland forest communities. Conservation efforts, scientific research, educational field trips, and recreation activities have focused on Shelburne Pond for nearly three decades, but the site has never had a comprehensive management strategy. The Nature Conservancy and UVM Natural Areas have identified the need for a Site Conservation Plan to define and implement specific management goals. This document contributes to the information gathering and analysis steps of the site conservation planning process. Current knowledge of the site's history and ecology are assembled and summarized, with maps, species lists, and a detailed bibliography to aid in further research.
