Searching for Squirrels: A Species Distribution Model of Flying Squirrel species in Vermont.

Abstract
Very little is known about flying squirrels in Vermont, despite the presence of two different species statewide. This project aimed to create a species distribution model for each species throughout Vermont to examine areas where they may overlap, as well as to be used in management decisions. Maximum Entropy, or MaxEnt, is a modeling method that uses presence data to compare environmental predictor variables to each other at geographic locations to assess the probability of a species being at that point. MaxEnt modeling was used to create a species distribution model for both Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans) and Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) in the state of Vermont. Modeling was done using R, factoring the 19 bioclimatic variables, as well as elevation, and land cover, as predictor variables to create 2 species distribution models for G. volans and G. sabrinus. The results indicate that G. volans prefers more montane areas, and modeling suggests occupancy is relatively confined to the middle of the Green Mountains. G. sabrinus does not require montane conditions, and instead, modeling suggests they are restricted to lower-laying areas of the state. The AUC of both models is above 0.9, indicating the models are performing very well, and the results are likely to be significant. A concern with the outputs is the small sample size of occupancy points, <35 points each, which may lead to some distortion. The implications of this project show the stark contrast in distribution of these two similar species across the state of Vermont and can lead to more studies and management decisions to help protect them for the future.
