Abstract
Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a progestin used in female hormonal contraceptives, with limited research on its cognitive and behavioral side effects. LNG delays habit development in female rats, but its mechanism of action is not understood. Female rats were administered LNG along with flutamide, an anti-androgen, or their respective controls. All rats underwent behavioral assessments to evaluate habit formation. The rats that received LNG and flutamide exhibited habitual behavior, while the rats with LNG and no flutamide remained goal-directed. This indicates that LNG’s androgenic effects are causing the delays in habit formation, prompting further research on the cognitive implications of LNG.
