Abstract
Pneumococcal infections represent a significant clinical and financial burden for CT and United States as a whole. Patients age 50 and up represent a population who are at increased risk for pneumococcal infections which can result in hospitalization and death. There are multiple pneumococcal vaccines available to the public that can help decrease incidences and severity of pneumococcal disease. However, an educational gap exists where patients decline the vaccine despite its known efficacy and safety. To better facilitate patient education in office and beyond, an informative brochure discussing the pneumococcal vaccine was created. The brochure covers details of pneumococcal disease, the vaccines, who it is recommended for, and some commonly asked questions. The brochure was designed in line with information from the CDC. The aim was to provide a convenient resource to help patients understand an important but potentially confusing topic. The goal is that better education will lead to better uptake of the pneumococcal vaccines, decreased incidences and severity of pneumococcal disease in the community, and ultimately decreased clinical and financial burden for the state.
