An Examination of Barriers to Vermont Women�s Access to Healthcare Services

Abstract
Previous reports indicate significant disparities in healthcare access in Vermont due to barriers to care, including a lack of a primary care provider and transportation limitations. Existing scholarly literature in medical anthropology and rural health studies highlights themes of healthcare inaccessibility among Vermont women, including health insurance, transportation, socioeconomic determinants of health, religious and political beliefs, and recent U.S. policy shifts. This research examines the aforementioned barriers for my chosen demographic, being twelve UVM female students between the ages of nineteen and twenty-seven years old. Through thorough interviews with a small sample of Vermont women, I gathered information on perceived healthcare barriers and conducted thematic and qualitative analyses, identifying patterns related to the current state of healthcare. The interviews were semi-structured and covered issues of access, barriers to access, and perceptions of access in Vermont. The contribution of my research to the existing literature fills a gap in the current-day lived experiences of barriers to health care in the Burlington area for women from diverse socioeconomic, religious, and political backgrounds, adding depth and lived experience to the existing focus on quantitative research and population-based analysis.
