Investigating the impacts of SRC-1 SH2 domain phosphorylation on cell migration

Abstract
The SRC-1 protein is a member of the SRC protein family and is found in C.elegans. SRC-1 is a tyrosine kinase serving many different roles as a signalling protein in the organism, including those of cell migration and axon guidance. A homologous protein, fyn, is found in humans. The overactivation of the fyn protein, which can be caused (like SRC-1) by phosphorylation at specific locations, is associated with neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. There are specific residues within the structure of SRC-1 that are susceptible to phosphorylation, altering its biochemical activity. We are curious as to how exactly phosphorylation and dephosphorylation on the protein�s structure, at specific places, impacts its function in the cell (such as in axon guidance and cell signalling) and what response the organism may produce. We would also like to investigate the broader implications of our research in terms of the homologous fyn protein and human medicine.
