Abstract
The protein HUC in the bacteria M. Smegmatis has a demonstrated ability to form high-energy molecules from atmospheric hydrogen. In order to investigate this phenomenon, an independent project was designed, funding was acquired, and new IBC approval for work with M. smegmatis was obtained. The aims of the project include optimizing growth conditions for M. smegmatis in modified Dubos media, isolating and propagating the HUC protein complex from M. smegmatis, designing a system for the measurement of hydrogen consumption by M. smegmatis and exploring the viability of M. smegmatis for bio-based fuel cells and batteries.
