Abstract
Toxic mushrooms pose a significant public health risk, yet accurate species identification remains challenging due to morphological similarity and cryptic diversity. This study aims to improve the classification and toxicological characterization of lethal mushroom species in Vermont, with a focus on Amanita bisporigera and closely related taxa, by integrating DNA barcoding with future toxin profiling. Sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region is used for molecular identification and phylogenetic analysis, while toxin composition is analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Together, these approaches are intended to generate a regional molecular and chemical reference framework for toxic fungi. This work contributes to fungal taxonomy, forensic toxicology, and public health by supporting more accurate species identification for mycologists, healthcare professionals, and foragers.
