Abstract
This thesis will act as an intervention in typecasting in contemporary American theatre. “Type” is a social construct created within the theatre that casts actors based primarily on their physical appearance. The faults of type will be addressed through the analysis of three contemporary plays written by women. These three plays challenge and work to subvert type in three unique ways by discussing gender, body, and beauty standards. This analysis will feature three case studies that will be used to illustrate the current work within the field to have conversations about typecasting.
