Abstract
With rising energy demand and the need to cut carbon emissions, integrating renewable energy with conventional power and heating through optimal energy management systems (EMS) offers a practical solution. This study improves integrated electric and thermal network efficiency in smart grids with district heating systems (DHSs). We propose an EMS with detailed building thermal models, applied to Savona Campus, featuring a smart polygeneration microgrid and a DHS. The model maintained the temperature of all buildings close to the target of 21°C, achieving 96% accuracy, while minimizing total costs, enabling optimal self-management, and decreasing reliance on external energy providers.
