From Diesel Dependency to Solar Power: How communities in Northwest Alaska are reshaping their energy futures

Abstract
Renewable energy systems offer an opportunity to restructure energy production and distribution to center community autonomy and facilitate more localized energy systems. In Northwest Alaska, villages such as Shungnak and Noatak currently function as Independent Power Producers where local leadership make decisions on the production of energy and revenues remain in the community. Through interviews with those involved in the ongoing renewable energy projects in the Northwest Arctic Borough, this study examines how community-owned solar arrays can facilitate more equitable, reliable, and sustainable energy production for rural communities.
