Improving Access to Bowel Preparation Instructions for Patients with Limited English Proficiency

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Vermont. Colonoscopy is a common screening modality, but this requires adequate bowel preparation. Limited English proficiency (LEP) is associated with inadequate bowel preparation, which can lead to canceled procedures, prolonged procedure times, increased procedure complication rates, early repeat procedures, and missed precancerous lesions. The Community Health Centers (CHC) of Burlington–Riverside serves a significant population of patients with LEP, and providers have noticed that many patients do not report receiving written bowel preparation instructions in their preferred languages. In collaboration with gastroenterology/endoscopy at the University of Vermont Medical Center, physical copies of translated bowel preparation instructions were obtained and delivered to CHC-Riverside. Making these instructions available at CHC-Riverside during primary care visits may improve bowel preparation quality for patients with LEP.
