Abstract
Why do individuals in Chittenden County, Vermont choose to have alternatives to lawn alternatives? I set out to answer this question by conducting fifteen semistructured interviews with different people whose yard had grass as a minor component, had a mowing schedule of less than four times per season and or had vegetation exceeding six inches in height. I examined the personal and social components of my participants yard care choices in order to gain a better understanding of why people choose to not have lawns.
