Abstract
Packetized energy management (PEM) is a demand dispatch scheme that adapts the principles of digital communication by splitting continuous chunks of energy consumption of distributed energy resources (DERs) into smaller packets of energy. This paper presents a quantization based approach to model heterogeneity in a fleet of aggregated DERs under PEM by grouping homogeneous fleets. The quantization approach is inspired from signal processing and consider rated power as the main source of heterogeneity since it is relevant to the PEM scheme. This is caused by the fact that the only information available to the PEM coordinator is the total power consumed and the number of request. The goal of the paper is to provided a systematic way for computing the appropriate number of groups that are representative of the heterogeneous population via a decoupled approach over the quantization error probability distribution. Simulations are provided for illustrative purposes throughout the paper.
