Association Between Physical Activity and Functional Limitations in Adults with Long COVID: Analysis of Vermont 2023 BRFSS Data

Abstract
Background: To examine the associations between engagement in aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises and limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs) among Vermont adults with long COVID. Methods: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the 2023 Vermont Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for 262 adults reporting prior COVID-19 infection with lasting long-term symptoms and complete covariate data. Bivariate associations were evaluated using Chi Square tests. Weighted bivariate logistic regression models estimated the odds of ADL limitations across exercise categories (meeting only aerobic exercise guidelines, meeting only strength training guidelines, and meeting both) adjusted for sociodemographic and health condition covariates. Results: Participants meeting both aerobic and strengthening guidelines had significantly lower odds of ADL limitations(OR=0.412;95%CI 0.384?0.441, P<0.001) compared with those who did not. Guideline-aligned aerobic activity alone (OR=0.451; 95%CI 0.421?0.484 , P<0.001) and strength training alone (OR =0.522; 95%CI 0.491?0.555 , p<0.001) were also protective. Conclusions: Meeting physical activity guidelines, particularly for both aerobic and strengthening exercises, was associated with reduced likelihood of functional limitations among Vermont adults living with long COVID.
