Abstract
The Concord Woods Natural Area Management Plan outlines the strategy for an approximately 100-acre parcel located on the southwest slope of Miles Mountain in Concord, Vermont. Designated as a natural area by the University of Vermont (UVM) Board of Trustees in 1974, the site consists of mature northern hardwood forest that, despite historical logging, currently exhibits little sign of recent disturbance. Due to its remote and inaccessible location, the area experiences low visitor use and lacks designated trails or facilities, making it an ideal location for long-term ecological research and monitoring. Current management emphasizes a low-key approach focused on seasonal visits to monitor overall conditions, maintain property boundaries, and prevent timber trespass, which is a particular concern due to extensive logging on surrounding lands. Active research projects at the site include a 20-year study of forest breeding bird populations by the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and forest health monitoring conducted by the US Forest Service and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation. Future objectives include recruiting local academic institutions for stewardship assistance and establishing various monitoring programs for invasive species, vegetation health, and wildlife diversity. This specific plan is part of the broader UVM Natural Areas System, which seeks to integrate land stewardship with the university’s research and educational missions.
