Abstract
Digital twins (DTs) are computational models personalized to an individual patient. They hold immense potential to augment clinical care and research of complex medical problems such as severe burns. We present the Burn Agent-based Model (BABM), a computational model that represents the skin’s response to burn injuries. It simulates a cross-section of skin subjected to a partial-thickness burn injury (PTBI), and after calibration using clinical burn data, successfully reproduces the healing and inflammatory dynamics of PTBI patients. The BABM represents the initial implementation of a modular skin component that can integrate into a personalized multi-tissue/organ DT of a burn patient.
