Optimization of Open Loop Thermal Energy Networks: Assessing Lake Champlain as an Alternative Thermal Source

Abstract
To reduce dependency on fossil fuels for building climate controls and improving resilience and reliability, thermal energy networks (TENs) utilize relatively constant subsurface temperatures to provide heating and cooling to buildings. This thermal energy application is utilized in the Burlington area at Champlain College and Hula co-working space where multiple buildings are regulated by an open-loop ground source heat pump network. These successful case studies point to the untapped potential of thermal energy applications in the Burlington area. A point of potential growth is using Lake Champlain as the thermal source for TENs, which presents important opportunities and challenges. First, initial construction cost is one of the largest challenges associated with TENs, and lake integration can reduce cost of system installation because wells are not required to source groundwater. Further, widespread adoption of TENs in Burlington would not only cut fossil fuel emissions but also reduce heat waste to air and water streams. However, controlling the temperature of the fluid returned to the lake can be a challenge, which has inhibited its use to date. Leveraging Burlington�s successful case studies as a foundation, this research will evaluate the economic, environmental, and energy efficiency performance of lake-integrated TENs, considering the needs of the lake ecosystems and buildings. With Hula as a case study, measured data and energy models will quantify performance differences for TENs when surface water is used instead of groundwater. Burlington could serve as a model community, demonstrating how to successfully implement TENs while also fostering the health of local ecosystems.
