Abstract
Flash drought (FD) is a cascading natural hazard that is particularly difficult to anticipate because its onset is complex and often unpredictable. FD begins swiftly and is followed by crippling intensification. Rapid changes in three fundamental weather variables—atmospheric evaporative demand, precipitation, temperature—are recognized as frequent signals of FD. One method of measuring FD is the Evaporative Demand Drought Index (EDDI), an experimental drought index that observes anomalies in the at.
