Abstract
Chronic stress is a leading contributor to long-term morbidity and mortality, with college students representing a particularly vulnerable demographic to its effects. Despite the well-documented physiological detriments of stress, current research often suffers from a lack of methodological reproducibility due to its focus on measuring acute stress in lab settings, making the quantification of chronic stress a significant challenge. To address this, we analyze longitudinal sleep and heart-rate data collected using consumer-grade wearable devices (Oura rings) from a cohort of college students. We derive a custom computational index that accurately captures allostatic load using standard, accessible biomarkers. This approach not only provides a scalable method for measuring individual chronic stress but also establishes a reproducible pipeline for future wearable-based biomarker research
