Abstract
The purpose of this project is to develop a model for ambulance response times in Vermont, allowing for response times to be visualized for any location in the state. This response time model will be validated using real ambulance response times from the past 5 years. The nuance of this study comes from its ability expand on past studies that measure ambulance deserts in Vermont and many other U.S. states. These previous models are based on 25-minute drive times from each station. A key generalization that these models make is that all chute times (time from EMS being dispatched to the ambulance beginning to drive) are 5 minutes at every agency. This studies model will preserve the idea that all ambulance responses should be within 30 minutes, but consider the chute time of each agency in its approach. Thus, agencies with slower chute times will contribute less to the 30-minute response service areas. This study will also consider factors that prevent the closest ambulance from being available. Different types of calls demand ambulances that are often not the closest; this is often due to the closest ambulance not being available or offering the necessary level of care. These call types will also be mapped to ensure a more holistic analysis of response times across the state.
