Abstract
The University of Vermont�s geology collection houses over 7000 rock, mineral, and fossil specimens, many of which have remained uncatalogued and underutilized for decades. Together with other interns, I have been working to digitize this collection, which will provide researchers access to images and descriptions of every item in the collection. This work primarily consists of data entry and photography, working with retired UVM paleontologist Charlotte Mehrtens to identify specimens that were previously catalogued without any taxonomic or descriptive information. The collection includes hundreds of shell, coral, brachiopod, leaf, and insect fossils, among many others, dating as far back as the Proterozoic eon. The geologic collection contains hundreds more samples of rocks and fossils from around the world. Many of these specimens have remained untouched in the collection for decades. Cataloguing of the collection is over halfway complete, and once fully catalogued, researchers from just about anywhere will be able to use the digital collection for further geologic and paleontologic research.
