Rainbow Smelt (Osmerus mordax) are an important native prey species in Lake Champlain. Two size classes of smelt have been identified: normal (≤ 220mm), and giant (>220mm), In the mid 1800s, fish >300mm and >225g were common; some writers suggested these fish were anadromous
