Boy Talk: Audience Influenced Style Shifting in Transgender and Cisgender Men

Abstract
In recent decades, the field of sociolinguistics has begun to acknowledge the speaker�s active role in shifting between speech styles to reflect their multifaceted identities. While gender expression is known to be a salient factor affecting style, little work has been done to see how transgender identity, an identity that heightens individual awareness of gendered performance, interacts with style-shifting. This project compares the production of gendered variables in a group of transgender and cisgender speakers when speaking with either a male or a female interviewer, to see if transgender individuals are more likely to accommodate to the audience with whom they are speaking.
