The James M. Jeffords Center began operation in 2008 with the receipt of a five-year grant from the Fund for Improvement of Education. The Jeffords Center connected the academic and research mission of UVM with Senator Jeffords' legacy of independence. During the grant period, the Jeffords Center worked to improve the well being of Vemonters through non-partisan research and evaluation resources to help policy makers and community leaders make better decisions.

The Jeffords Center made significant contributions to research, knowledge, practice and policy in the areas of education, health care, environment and good government for all Vermonters. In less than four years, the Jeffords Center built a reputation for having the ability to bridge academic and agency silos to promote collaboration. Working with students, faculty and external partners, Jeffords Center staff and affiliates completed multiple professional reports and briefs that will have lasting impact on policy issues. This collection contains reports and issue briefs produced by the Jeffords Center.

Although the Jeffords Center closed at the conclusion of the grant period, the University of Vermont continues to honor the legacy of Senator Jeffords through an endowed fund that is overseen by the Office of the Provost.
