Abstract
With a strong localvore movement driving the revival of the small grains industry in the Northeast, craft breweries and distilleries are interested in sourcing local barley for malting. To be suitable for malting, barley must meet specific quality characteristics such as low protein content, high starch content, and high germination. In the fall of 2023, a winter malting barley trial was initiated at Borderview Research Farm in Alburgh, Vermont to evaluate yield and quality of 22 winter malting barley varieties.
