Systematic Review of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Pregnancy within US Prisons and Jails

Abstract

The prevalence of perinatal opioid use disorder (OUD) in the criminal legal system continues to increase, but access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) continues to vary widely throughout the system. This is in spite of accepted standard perinatal treatment guidelines which include the avoidance of opioid withdrawal given the increased risk of relapse and overdose. We aimed to identify access to MOUD treatment options for pregnant people within the criminal legal system as well as to describe alternative practices including opioid withdrawal without medication support.
