Abstract
Objective: To explore the association between Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and leisure time physical activity (LTPA) adjusting for rurality in adult Vermonters.
Methods: The 2022 Vermont Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was utilized to examine associations between T2D and LTPA. A binomial logistic regression model was conducted adjusting for rurality, age, sex, physical health, health insurance, education level, race, and healthcare access. The study included 7,651 adults.
Results: Participants with no LTPA had 2.31 times greater odds of having T2D compared to those with LTPA (CI (1.78-2.99). The following were more likely to have T2D: participants aged 50+ (OR.5.29, 95% CI 3.24-8.64); White, non-Hispanics (OR.15.17, 95% CI 9.60-23.98); those with government insurance (OR.1.84, 95% CI 1.41-2.41); participants with poor physical health (OR.1.36, 95% CI 1.07-1.73); and those with a General Educational Development (GED) [Ed1] or below (OR.1.35, 95% CI 1.05-1.75). Females were less likely to have T2D (OR.0.73, 95% CI 0.58-0.93[EdJ2] ).
Discussion: Participants with no LTPA were more likely to have T2D. There is a need to promote LTPA in Vermont by increasing accessible physical activities (e.g., by funding indoor physical activities) and increasing diabetes awareness.
