The Belt and Road Initiative's Impact on U.S. Influence and Liberal Institutions
Conference Year
January 2020
Abstract
In 2013, China announced its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This Initiative is a large-scale development program focused on connecting and facilitating trade between Asian, European, and African countries. The BRI expands China’s influence regionally and internationally. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects BRI has already had on participating countries; as well as, how the impact of BRI on those participating countries affects U.S. influence and liberal international institutions. Three countries are used as case studies to show the potential impacts of the Initiative; specifically, Iran, Egypt, and Pakistan. Then, possible policy solutions from the U.S. on how to navigate the BRI will be discussed.
