A Study of Co-occurring Disorders
Conference Year
2024
Abstract
Rates of co-occurring substance use and serious mental illness are a growing public health concern. Research has found that individuals with these disorders face many barriers when seeking effective treatment. Additionally, co-occurring disorders disproportionately affect vulnerable populations such as homeless individuals, those in the justice system, and veterans. The rising rates of co-occurring disorders are a pressing concern, as the opioid crisis and overdose rates continue to increase throughout the United States. The proposed study will measure rates of co-occurring disorders, barriers individuals with these disorders face when seeking treatment, and compile evidence on how practitioners can successfully treat co-occurring disorders through an extensive literature review and interviews with treatment providers.
