How do you see the color red?: Exploring the history of communist theory and changing soviet political cultures

Presenter's Name(s)

Abstract

This thesis project will explore how Soviet communism came to be changed and distorted throughout the course of the country’s history. Starting with the writings of Marx and Engles in The Communist Manifesto, the original tenets of the theory will be traced from Lenin to Gorbachev, seeing how each leader interpreted the political philosophy and how that, in turn, changed what “communism” meant to the Soviet public. Looking at each leader’s rhetoric, policies, and the subsequent results of “communism” on the ground will hopefully provide more clarity to a concept with a mystifying and chaotic history.
