Redefining the "ideal man": Men's body image through social media and human development perspectives
Abstract
Social media has reshaped how young men perceive their bodies, reinforcing unrealistic ideals that contribute to Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (MDD), and various Eating Disorders. This presentation explores how human development theories explain digital exposure's impact on men's self-image. It examines statistical trends, psychological consequences, and the intersectionality of media representation. By understanding these influences, we will learn how to foster healthier narratives of masculinity and body image, mitigating harm through education, media literacy, and supportive social work interventions.
