Farming in the age of AI: The barriers and opportunities of AI-enabled precision agriculture technology adoption
Abstract
Ensuring sustainable access to food has become increasingly challenging with limited agricultural resources, rising costs, and labor shortages. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential solutions in improving farm productivity. Yet, financial barriers, farmer concerns, and socio-cultural challenges hinder AI adoption, particularly for small-scale farms. By combining both qualitative and quantitative methods, this study offers a nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics involved in integrating new technologies into agriculture. We expect to have preliminary results from semi-structured interviews assessing farmer attitudes towards AI, and technology more broadly, in agriculture. This will increase understanding of the relationship between farmers and AI and how that will impact the future of sustainable food production.
